Well, when you come back from Jungle Island, you'll notice that the
temple door is closed. When you walk up to it, the door opens even
though you touch no control. Also, as the door opens, you see a
fading image of a person in the temple. So that person must've
been sitting in the chair and watching for your return, then he
opened the door for you. Don't bother trying to hurry back to
the chair room, though. He'll be long gone before you leave the temple.
Unless you can find out something else interesting to do in the
temple, the chair room is just there for show.
